Before choosing an area, set aside “where is the most beautiful” for a moment and ask instead what living conditions you can least do without in daily life. Do you value contact with neighbors? Do you long for a lively environment? Are you willing to handle the small practical tasks of winter yourself? And if the whole family is moving together, who might be the first to find it hard to adapt? Yoichi, Akaigawa, Otaru, the suburbs of Sapporo — each has its own pace of life, and the answer that truly suits you is rarely hidden inside a famous place name.
